With only one week to go until Luscious Cabaret its time to start the performer profiles! Today we catch up with ex-Luscious burlesque student Roman Ackley to find out what got him up on stage for the first time!
Why did you start performing?
This spring- though I’ve been dipping into performance since High School
Do you remember your first time on stage? How did that go?
The school nativity play. I was the donkey. I wanted to be the angel but they told me boys couldn’t be angels. So not only my first performance but my first bit of gender non-conformity
Of all of your acts, which is your favourite to perform?
There’s one involving a gold demon mask and metres and metres of fake pearls that’s a bit fun
What sets you apart from other performers?
My lack of filters.
What do you think is people’s first impression of you?
I dread to think.
What’s your favourite thing about cabaret?
The community is great, and has a diversity and imagination that really comes through in the variety of shows
How did you choose your stage name?
Roman Ackley is a bastardisation of ‘Roman-à-clef’- a book where events are true but names are made up. So it’s a bit like being called Sue D’Enim.
What’s your next challenge in life or in performing?
Winning my ballet instructor’s grudging respect. She’s stern but fair.
