On Thursday next week the Luscious Burlesque Night returns and I cannot wait! This is my favourite part of the course seeing what the students have come up with and worked into an act. Each show is different but the crowd is always hugely supportive and loud. We love an audience that whoops and cheers our performers on. During the very first Luscious night (back then it was called the Little Mistress Night) our compere was a regular on the comedy circuit, she went out to warm up the crowd and they were so excited she had very little to do. Her face when she came off stage was pure amazement “I usually have to pull teeth to get that sort of reaction on the comedy circuit”. We’ve had quiet nights and we’ve had sell outs but each has had the same wonderful atmosphere of fun, love and support.
Last term we had such a wonderful mix of comedy, sexy, cute and fabulous burlesque. Here are just a few of my favourite moments from the show …
The group picture. Before every show we get a picture of the students and myself. This is usually just before we open the doors for the audience to come in. In March there was a real sense of excitement before the show. There were a few nerves but each student was looking forward to getting up on stage. The next time I saw them was after they performed and those smiles were a lot bigger and brighter at the end of the show.
The warm up – A few years ago our host Gemma Layton decided to get our stage kitten to do a mini strip before the show started to help warm up the crowd. She did not tell him this until they were on stage. It went down so well, all of our stage kittens have to do it. Vince Moon is now our regular stage kitten and he loves to get his kit off even if he does look a little reluctant in this picture.
The Interval Workshop – Every show we have a little workshop where I teach the audience a little burlesque routine. At the last show it was the first time the volunteers were majority male. Each grabbed their boa and got in with the action. None signed up for the classes afterwards but I am hopeful for another fab group on stage next week.
Admiral John – We wrote a whole blog on him recently but at the last show he revealed the latest version of his chest with motorised tassels. It was a joy to behold. Who knows what he has in store for us next week!
The Luscious Ladies and Gentlemen – Saving the best moments to last. Whenever a student walks on to the stage I can’t help but smile it doesn’t matter to me if they make a mistake in their routine it matters that they are there. They’ve made that step from off stage to on stage, where they are the centre of attention and for the next 3 -5 minutes it is their time to shine and show the world how fabulous they are. Each student has a moment of pure joy on stage here a few from the last show.
I get such a rush of pride and love for each student when they finish their act. In some ways it’s the end of the show but most importantly it’s a new beginning in their lives. Join us on Thursday at The Four Thieves to see our next group of Luscious Ladies and Gents shine on stage.
